  • American intrest in Hawaii began in the late 1800's
  • I will teach Hawaii to be christain!
  • The sugar trade started in the 1840's
  • It's a great time to be a sugar cane grower!
  • 1874
  • I will take Hawaii's power back!
  • In the 1820's Americans began to arrive at Hawaii. American ships brought missionaries to covert Hawiians to christianity.  Hawaii was an ideal spot for coaling stations and naval bases for ships traveling to and from Asia. 
  • 1875
  • All sugar to enter the United States is tax free!
  • In the 1840's the sugar trade started and the sugar industries grew. Americans provided generous terms to the hawaiian sugar growers. 
  •                              1886
  • In 1874 Kalakaua became king. But by then the United States already gained control of Hawaii's economy and land. Kalakaua was nationalistic and wanted the native Hawaiians to gain back power. 
  • 
  • In 1875 King Kalakaua negotiated a treaty that allowed Hawaiian sugar to enter the United States tax free. 
  •  KIn 1886 American business owners and the king escalated. The US wanted the port of pearl harbor in exchange for renewing the sugar treaty. King Klakaua didnt want to give up any of Hawaii's independence.
