Storyboard Text

  • Raise your hand if you want Kansas to enter the United States as a slave state.
  • NO! I WANT IT AS FREE, BECAUSE IT'S MUCH BETTER THAT WAY!!
  • We want it as a slave state!
  • Ok. We are here in Kansas. Is everyone ready to commit voter fraud?
  • Yes sir. We are ready.
  • Let's do it!
  • Aw man, looks like a tornado is coming.
  • Life is really tough out here with this unpredictable weather.
  • Yeah I think so.
  • I wonder why Kansas would be like this.
  • As part of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, people were deciding whether or not to make Kansas as a slave state or free state.
  • I have heard that some of my slaves escaped to Kansas.
  • Don't worry, I will find them for you and you will pay me.
  • Missourians known as border ruffians came into Kansas to commit voter fraud, which created more tensions between the anti- and pro-slavery settlers.
  • Everyone living in Kansas was living under harsh conditions.
  • We are anti-slavery people.
  • We are pro-slavery people.
  •  Since slaves were trying to escape from Missouri to Kansas, the slave owners offered to pay others a bounty to bring them back.
  • Abolitionist John Brown killed five men in the pro-slavery town of Pottawatomie Creek in May 1856.
  • Because their government is disorganized, the capital of Kansas moved to five different towns, and two separate legislatures existed too: One anti-slavery and one pro-slavery.
