Jen gave books to Luke about the population laws and computer print outs to read. Luke did not want to read the books, but Luke did not want to be questioned by Jen about his reading skills. While Luke was waiting for the rain to stop so he could visit Jen his father would stay inside. Therefore Luke would hide the books cautiously.

Luke's father came into the attic to play cards with Luke. Then while playing cards Luke found out that Luke's family will go broke after the hod money runs out. Luke then suggest planting inside during the winter to make money. Luke found out about hydroponics from one of the books from Jen.
Luke read many people starved for years in one of the books. In Luke's country at one point each person was limited to 1,500 calories a day. Later the Govt. took control over food production; shut down junk food companies. Farmers were moved to grow more food. These rule were not enough so the population laws were made. While Luke was eating he felt guilty about eating food becuase his third child food could have gone to someone starving.
Luke later read the articles and was relieved. The articles reveiled that the population laws were overated and hurt and even killed shadow children. Luke asked Jen why she had Luke read the books. Jen said to show him the importance of the protest of the third children rights.
Luke thought he would never leave the house becuase it was snowing. Then the weather got better so Luke's father left to go to town. Which gave Luke the oprotunitie to go to Jen's house.
When Luke arrived to Jen's house she was on the shadow child group chat. The other shadow children were talking about fake I.Ds, but Jen didn't like the idea becuase she thought the fake I.Ds were just another way to hide. That is why she needed the rally to go on so she didn't have to hide.
