In this story the main characters are Montresor and Fortunato. This story takes place either in Italy or around there and in the catacombs. The mood is suspenseful and mysterious. The author's theme is immolation.
The conflict in this story was how Montresor was going to get Fortunato to the vaults. Fortunato was a little intoxicated so he used this to his advantage. Montresor was planning on how he was going to do this.
It all starts off when Montresor tells Fortunato about the Amontillado. They decide to go to his vaults to retrieve the wine. When they get there Montresor puts his cloak on and finds out that Fortunato has a cough, yet he continues to go. During the walk deeper into the vaults Montresor keep giving him wine and shows him that he is a mason.
After they finally got far enough into the vaults Montresor made his move. He made sure that Fortunato was kept intoxicated. Next he strapped Fortunato's arms to the wall and finished up his plan to kill Forunto.
After the climax had happened, the Montresor began to lay the tier of masonary. While he was doing this Fortunato started to cry and yell. Montresot stopped but then began, but Fortunato was laughing this time. He thought that this was a joke and that they would just go home after this is done. Finally Montresor forced the last block into place and let Fortunato to die.
During this Fortunato was kept intoxicated, and Montresor made sure of it. That is how Montreosr even got Fortunato through the vaults and into his death. The way done to the vaults there was always wine, so Fortunato was always kept intoxicated.
