  • Impression Management Strategies 1. Ingratiation 2. Supplication
  • Certainly, It means behaving in ways to make oneself likeable to others either by favours or flattery.

  • There are three types of Ingraition. Can you explain these for us.

  • Acquisition - the goal of this is to obtain a reward or resources from the target
  • Significance- the goal is to cultivate respect or approval from the target

  • Now we look at Supplication.
  • Impression Management Strategy Supplication
  • According to their book,  Jones and Pittman stated Supplication is "where individuals  advertise their weaknesses  or shortcomings in order to elicit an attribution of being needy from observers".
  • Any example you could provide us?
  • So in other words,  it means behaving weak and incompetent in order to get help or sympathy
  • Impression Management Strategy- Supplication
  • For instance, a child may feign an inability to do homework. This provides the parent's nurturing side which results in parent doing the homework.
  • Are there any draw backs to Supplication?
  • Impression Management Strategy Supplication
  • It may work because of the social norms to help however most people to whom supplication is directed will quickly tire of repeated demands on their pity. Supplication is also distasteful to the supplicant because it is personally demeaning .
  • That's our time tonight. We do hope that you will join us next time.
  • Thank You for joining us tonight. We will see you next week when we discuss Intimidation, Exemplificationa and Self-promotion.
