Once upon a time, there was a girl who lived in Greece and was a very skilled weaver. Her name was Arachne.
Arachne was a very proud girl, and many people visited her while she worked. One of them was an old woman.
The old woman told Arachne that she was too proud, after Arachne had told the crowd that she was a better weaver than Athene herself. Athene told the old woman that she challenged Athene to a duel.
The old woman said that Arachne would regret that, but Arachne insisted. The old woman turned into Athene, and told Arachne that she accepted the duel. Arachne led Athene to a second loom, and they began.
Arachne had never woven with someone who's skill was matched with her own. She felt flushed with shock and rage, so she weaved an image of the gods in an unworthy state.
Athene looked over at Arachne's weaving, and was so angry at Arachne that she tore apart Arachne's weaving and turned her into a spider.
