orval faubus governor refused to let 9 black students attend the school. president eisenhower sent in federal troops to allow the students enter the school. the troops took care of them for a year.
Selma Alabama march
when freedom riders were attacked in montgomery alabama, president kennedy sent 400 u.s marshals to protect the freedom riders. the lunch sit-ins were when african americans would go sit where they were not allowed to it. they refused to get up until they were served.
voting Acts of 1965
on August 28, 1963 more than 250,000 black and white people marched into the nations capital.
in 1965, civil rights workers attempted a voting project in selma, Alabama. This was when collage students went down to the south the entire summer and helped black people register for voting.
Congress passed the voting rights act of 1965. the law eliminated state laws that had prevented african americans from voting.
