Scout starts second grade. One day when they were walking back from school, they found two soap dolls. The soap dolls looked exactly like them and where left in a knot-hole by a tree. They kept on finding more presents, so they decided to write a note and thank the person. When they passed by Mr. Nathan had filled the hole with cement.
Chapter 10: Old Dad
Their fall turn into one of the coldest winters they have had since 1885. They keep warm by turning on fires. During the night one of the houses catches on fire, Atticus tells the kids to wait and not move. While the kids watched the tragedy happen
Chapter 11: Jem and Scout cuts bushes
When Scout goes to school, Cecil Jacob starts a rumor that her father defends blacks. She manages to control herself because she knows it would make Atticus upset. When she goes to her Aunts house, her cousin Francis makes fun of her because she told him that Dill had asked her to marry him. She controls herself until Francis says her dad is a negro lover. They get on a fight, which Scout is blamed for.
Chapter 12: Calpurnias church
The kids get taught why it is a sin to kill a mockingbird. Atticus tells them that mockingbirds do not cause any trouble, they only create music. Also, the kids do not like that their father is old and can not do as many things as the other fathers. What they don't know is that their father only let's them win.
Jem and scout cut the tops of Mrs. Duboses bushes because Mrs. Dubose called Atticus a Nigger lover. This causes Mrs. Dubose to get mad at Jem, making Jem read to her for the rest of the month.
Calpurnia brings Jem and Scout to her church also known as the colored church, and Lula, a member of the church gets mad that calpurnia brought these white children to the colored church.
