Amber stared at the placemats trying to process what her mother had just told her to do. A few moments ago her mother had entered the room and said, “Amber, (sigh), you have to escape tonight.”
Amber replied, “do I have to do it alone? Can’t I ask Sky?”Mother hated to put Sky in danger but it was for the best. “Alright, you can ask her after you pack,” Mother answered...
~2 HOURS LATER~ “RUN!” Sky screamed, as a bullet whizzed past her ear. The slave catchers were catching up to them. Amber was falling behind so Sky grabbed her arm so that Amber could catch up to her. A bullet buried itself into Sky’s leg just below her knee, still holding Amber’s hand she fell. The first slave catcher said to his partner , let ‘em run. I like chasen’ ‘em.”
~10 Minutes later~ Amber peered over the cornstalks at the sleeping slave catchers. She turned back to Sky the bandage she had tied around the wound was already red with blood. “What should we do?” Sky said with a wince of pain. Amber cocked her head “Do you see that?” She asked, “It looks like… a light!”
“I think it’s a lantern by a house,” Amber said. She looked Sky in the eye “let’s go!” Sky heaved herself up and leaning heavily on Amber, they made the long trek to their only hope.
As it turned out it was a lantern by a house. The owners, Mr.,and Mrs. Watcher were an anti slavery couple looking to adopt. They rescued Sky’s little sisters 10 year old Charlotte, and 5 year old Kate. They even rescued Amber’s 2 year old brother, Pax. Unfortunately neither Sky’s parents lived, nor did Amber’s parents live.
