The compromise has 5 laws that were made within it. The fugitive slave act was made. The slave trade in Washington D.C. was taken away. New Mexico got a territorial government.
Kansas Nebraska act of 1854/ Bleeding Kansas
The law said for southerners to help capture runaway slaves. It also took way the slave's rights to trial by jury. It also had federal commissioners get paid more for returning a slave than for freeing them which made a lot of people mad.
Dred Scott Decision of 1857
Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote the book when she was in Cincinnati. She ran into the Underground Railroad and fugitive slaves. Within 3 months of publishing the novel, she sold 300,000 copies. Many people said that it changed their view point on slavery.
Lincoln Douglas Debates of 1858
The Kansas Nebraska act was passed by Congress on May 30, 1854. The act allowed people who lived in Kansas and Nebraska vote with popular sovereignty. The North disagreed with it because they were fine with the Missouri Compromise while the south agreed with it. Bleeding Kansas was a time of violence while Kansas was still settling into their state. A fight broke out with pro-slavery people and anti-slavery people as they were trying to help the decision.
Dred Scott and his wife tried to sew for their freedom in St. Louis after being brought as slaves to a free territory. The Supreme court gave the right to slave owners to take their slaves with them to the western territories. The Chief Justice stated that "slaves were not citizens and therefore could not expect protection from the federal courts."
People were convinced that the turn out of the debate would determine how the union ran. Lincoln and Douglas were running for the place of a senator. The people reelected Douglas with Lincoln later becoming president.
