If this passes, that means that we will give the south permission to continue slavery
Northern Free States: Beliefs about Congressional Power?
We, the people should decide if we want to be a slave or free state! not congresses
Northern Free States: Fears about the Compromise?
WE ARE GIVING THE SOUTH PERMISSION TO EXPAND SLAVERY!
Because the north wanted slavery to end but if the compromise happened than slavery would continue to spread and abolitionist sentiment was growing in the North.
Southern Slave States: Why did they support it?
We are a slave state now! This is a stepping stone into are expansion of slavery
They believed that the federal government and Congress have no authority to pass laws that banned or regulated slavery and that it should be left to the people living in the state whether they would be a free or slave state through popular sovereignty.
Southern Slave States: Beliefs about states' rights?
We, the state government, have decided to be a slave state!
They feared that it would take up too much power in Congress and that it would give the south a thumbs up to expand slavery.
Southern Slave States: Fears about the Compromise?
My biggest fear about the compromise is that we can't have slaves above the 36-30 line
Because Missouri would become a slave state and there could be slave states below the line which meant that slavery could expand, which was not what the north wanted.
They believed that the state government should decide if it will be a slave state or free state to preserve slavery instead of the people through popular sovereignty
But we didn't get a vote!
They feared that it would end slavery moving west and above the 36-30 line and in turn they would lose power in Congress because they would not hold as many seats
