Storyboard Text

  • P-Paraphrase
  • C-Connotations
  • A-Attitude
  • "What but design of darkness to appall?-If design govern in a thing so small."
  • A spider captured a butterfly on a flower and killed it.
  • S-Shifts
  • There is a lot of figurative language and imagery representing light and dark. The color white and blue as well as snowdrops and dimpled represent the light while witches' broth and death represent darkness.
  • T-Title
  • The tone is somber as well as awe. Frost wonders what kind of design causes darkness in the smallest things like a spider killing a moth and is somber when reflecting on this thought.
  • T-Theme
  • The poem shifts from light to dark. It begins by describing how the spider, moth, and flower are all white, signifying light. It shifts to how the spider killed the moth and how darkness can be found in the smallest things.
  • The title "Design" signifies that there is light and dark or good and evil by design in every occurrence.
  • There is lightness and darkness in every design and sometimes, things that may appear good can be bad.
