  • Readers are first introduced to a futuristic setting where Guy Montag, a firefighter, intentionally sets fires to books in order to stops people from reading them. But, he only starts to question his life choices and personality after meeting a young girl, Clarisse, who asks him if he is truly happy.
  • Climax
  • When Montag and the other firefighters are called to the house of an older lady, she tells them she wants to be burned with her books. This action makes Montag question what is so important in books that made her not want to live without them.
  • Falling Action
  • Beatty tells a "sick" Montag about the history of books, and why society got rid of them, hoping to make him feel better after burning the old lady. Montag then shows Mildrid, his wife, all of the books he's been hiding and she tells him to get rid of them in the next 24 hours. Ignoring her, he becomes obsessed with attempting to read.
  • Resolution
  • Montag is taken to his own house by Beatty to burn it down, upon the discovery that he has books there and has been reading them aloud. However, Montag not only burns the house down, but kills Beatty as well so he can escape arrest for possessing so many books.
  • Montag runs away and jumps into a river to get away from the people chasing him for the death of Beatty and for possessing books.
  • Montag stumbles upon book readers like himself, but after the city Montag came from is destroyed by bombs, they go out to rebuild civilization over again. However, this time, society will have books.
