Priority setting is an important skill in nursing, and a skill deficit can have serious consequences for patients.
Medical Surgical Unit
Independent patient, "I'd like to get freshened up."
As a new nurse exhibiting effective prioritization of patient care, I will remember that patients' acuity level, values and priorities, urgency of the health problem, and the medical treatment plan may all have an impact on the priority-setting process.
Incontinent patient, "I need help getting cleaned up."
Correctly prioritizing means that I will assist my incontinent patient with getting cleaned up after an accident prior to assisting my other patient who is independent.
