1821 - Mexico wins its independence
1830 - Mexico sealed its borders and began to charge American settlers taxes. Mexico also made slavery illegal. This became a problem for the American settlers because they used slaves to work their cotton fields. American settlers began to rebel against the Mexican government.
The Mexican government allowed 300 American settlers to build a colony in Texas. Thousands of American settlers entered their territory. These settlers were LOYAL to the United States. Mexicans became worried that the Americans would try to take control of Texas.
1830- Mexico sealed its borders and slapped a heavy tax on the importation of American goods.
1835- The Texans drive the Mexican forces from the Alamo.
March 2, 1836- Texas declares its independence from Mexico during the battle for the Alamo, joining the Union in the process.
