  • The Carpenter hall in Philadelphia held the first continental congress from Sept 5 to Oct 26
  • 56 delegates from every colony except for Georgia came to the first continental congress including Peyton Randolph, Patrick Henry, George Washington, and John Adams.
  • A meeting of 56 delegates who decided on how to respond to the closing of Boston Harbor, increased taxes, and abuses of authority by the British government
  • Because the king and Parliament had to be understanding about the grievances of the colonies and that the body must do everything possible to communicate the same to America and the whole world
  • The first continental congress congress introduced the debate between the delegates on whether or not they would become independent or stay with Britain.
  • Then the fighting broke out in 1775.
