Frederick douglass came up with an escape plan to escape by going up the chesapeake river in Mr. Hamilton’s canoe . Frederick thought going by canoe would be safer than escaping by land . Douglas has always wanted to escape. Douglass is a leader to other slaves. Being the leader made Douglass feel “the responsibility of success or failure lay heavily upon me” p. 79.
Frederick douglass is at Mr.Freeland’s plantation with other slaves in Maryland. Frederick Douglass is a slave at the plantation. Frederick douglass was born into slavery and he barely saw his mother. Douglass had no choice in his life and faced many cruel challenges. He was moved to different plantations in his young life and experienced many beatings because he was not obedient enough. Douglass is fighting for freedom for himself and for other slaves like him. Frederick is an incredible learner who dreams about being free. Frederick wants to become an abolitionist . Frederick wants to escape the horrors of slavery but he knows the dangers of escaping. Douglas knows that if he escapes and gets caught he would be beaten and put into jail.
When Frederick Douglass is moved to Mr. Freeland’s plantation he is treated better and does not get beatings. While at the plantation he starts a Sabbath School and he teaches other slaves how to read. Douglass starts to feel a strong desire to escape and be free. He couldn’t stand the thought of being a slave into adulthood. He got his friends Henry and John to be part of his plan to escape.
