Salem Witchcraft Hysteria
The Puritans in Salem were very superstitious, always worried about Satan and witchcraft. The events of 1692 shocked the colony and has left a blemish on American history.
In the winter of 1692, several young girls began to exhibit odd behaviors that were believed to be from witchcraft. The girls accused their slave, Tituba of witchcraft.
Tituba was questioned, confessed and pointed the finger at others.
Soon, neighbors were accusing neighbors of witchcraft! Over 200 people in the Salem area were accused of being a witch.
