Since you needed food that wouldn't spoil quickly, you had to eat that horrid pickled meat and dried cakes! They caused so many health problems! The meat was so salty because it was preserved in salt water!
The food wasn't THAT bad... It's okay...
Hardtack and Beverages
Hardtacks were for the Union army. They weren't that appetizing... However, we could carry coffee beans to make our favorite hot drink!
We had a good drink too; it was made from chicory!
Soldiers had very few supplies. They had to hunt, take, find, and steal supplies.
Shortage of Supplies
Soldiers had to search for supplies on the countryside. They would sometimes steal supplies from farms.
Soldiers hunted for game and picked berries.
When Confederate soldiers ran out of supplies, they had to find their own food to keep from starving.
The food quality was horrible. Soldiers carry around pickled meat and dried cakes.
Attempting to improve the flavor of the very salty meat, soldiers would soak the pickled meat in water for several hours. After that, they would fry the meat in grease before eating it. In place of fresh vegetables, soldiers ate dried cakes. The dried veggie cakes were made of beans, onions, turnips, carrots, beets, roots, stalks, and leaves.
Hardtacks were dry biscuits made of flour and water. They tasted like thick, unsalted, hard crackers. Soldiers would often find worms and weevils in their hardtacks. Both sides had favorite drinks: the Union army used coffee beans to make theirs, and the Confederate army boiled a root called chicory.
Soldiers had limited supplies. They would take fruit from orchards and steal cows, pigs, and chicken from nearby farms. When they had the chance, they would raid each others' supplies.
