The United States was being treated with disrespect on the high seas, and as the British Navy was forcing American sailors off of all their ships and into working for them. The taking of men from a ship was known as "impressment."

On December 24, 1814, the Americans and British signed the Treaty of Ghent. That treaty finally ended the war of 1812. But even after they signed the treaty the battle of New Orleans happened.

On January 8, 1815, the British, attacked the American positions at New Orleans unaware that they had signed the treaty. They also showed little respect for the group assembled by Andrew Jackson.
The British marched on Washington and burned many government buildings, such as the Capitol and the White House.The President and (James Madison) was warned in time to escape.
Francis Scott Key wrote a poem called "The Defense of Fort McHenry" which was then turned into "The Star-Spangled Banner."

In 1812, James Madison asked Congress to declare war on Britain. His reasoning had to do with England’s naval violations and their incitement of the Indians. Congress voted to declare war on Great Britain, and a second war with England began.
