  • Pi lists training suggestions for taming wild animals at sea, one of these being using an anchor to rock the boat making the wild animal seasick. and then blowing a whistle loudly if the animal steps in to your territory, so the wild animal will associate nausea/sickness with the sound of the whistle, furthermore Pi says to continue and repeat this routine until the wild animal knows to walk away when the whistle is heard.
  • Chapter 68
  • Pi makes a shield from a turtle shell to use for protection during the training sessions. On the first attempt of this, Richard Parker knocks Pi down, P, terrified, hides in the lifeboat for day and night. Pi keeps getting knocked over. However Richard Parker didn't want to kill him as Pi explained later. Then Pi times it perfectly on the 5th time and Richard Parker never attacks him again.
  • Chapter 69
  • Pi endlessly longs for a book, or scriptures, perhaps even a book that never ends. He writes in a little diary but soon the entries get jumbled up and scattered as he loses track of time, he predominantly writes practical topics such as weather and Richard Parker's activities/actions.
  • Chapter 70
  • Pi lives on little sleep, maybe an hour at a time, contrasted to Richard Parker who sleeps soundly in various comfortable positions.
  • Pi thinks he sees light in the distance some nights and sends a flare. But the area around him is only a 5 mile radius so there is little hope. The flares always smell like cumin which brings him back to Pondicherry.
  • Pi struggles to get a turtle on-board as it is huge, Pi drinks the turtle blood as the survival manual suggested it, he butchers the turtle in a savage way in an attempt to carve out more territory for himself.
