  • Hamartia
  • Hubris
  • Peripeteia
  • Oedipus shows Hamartia and it leads to his downfall when he insults with anger the prophet, and the god's command. In scene 1 Oedipus says: "Where was your gift of prophecy then? and now you expel me?." This is Hamartia because it shows how Oedipus does not believe the prophet and he insulted him. His anger leads to his downfall because he insults the gods, he doesn't know that they will take revenge on him, and they'll make his life miserable.
  • Anagnorosis
  • Oedipus shows Hubris and excessive pride when he says to his citizens that he suffers more than them. In scene 1 Oedipus says:" I pity you, children. Iknow you all are sick, yet no one of you suffers as much as I." This is hubris because it shows how Oedipus thinks he has more problems than the others. This will cause him problems later when he met the prophet and he treated him how he wasn't supposed to.
  • Nemesis
  • Oedipus shows a reversal of fortune when he noticed that Jocasta committed suicided= by hanging herself, he got himself blind. In the exodus, the second messenger says: "He tore the brooches from her and lifted them up high and dashed them into his own eyeballs." This is Perpetia because it shows how now he is living like the prophet he hated, but the thing is that the prophet can see everything but he can't, now he does not have anything.
  • Catharis
  • Oedipus shows Anagnorisis and a critical discovery when he finally realizes the truth of his life. In scene 4 Oedipus says: "O,o,o, the light of the sun, let me look upon you no more, cursed is my life." This is Anagnorisis because it shows how Oedipus definitely discovered the fact that everything he knew about was a lie and that the person that he was looking for was always him.
  • Oedipus shows Nemesis and a fate that cannot be avoided when he slept with his mother and made kids with her, and when he killed his father. In scene 2 he said: "I was doomed to lie with my mother and be the murderer of my father." This is Nemesis because it shows how he cannot change the consequences of his actions
  • Oedipus shows Catharsis when he asked his brother to take care of his two daughters. In the exodus, Oedipus says: "Oh my lord! is it my daughters I hear sobbing? My two darling. Come to these hands of mine, your brother's hands Creon has had pity and has sent me what I loved most." This is Catharsis because it gives to the audience the fear/pity of Oedipus leaving his daughters and leaving his kingdom forever.
