The Nga Tai tribe settled in the Maraetai, Whitford, and Howick area, under the forest cover
the Ngati te Ata tribe was in the south of Manukau, and on the coast of Whangaaroa was the Ngati Paoa tribe
Between 1740 and 1750 Ngati Whatua o Kaipara killed Kiwi Tamaki, the chief of Wai o Hua.
The two tribes made an intermarriage with Nga Oho, a descendant of Wai o Hua tribe.
In 1821 , Ngapuhi leader Hongi Hika made a series of attacks on the Tamaki tribes. He attacked two Ngati Paoa fortified settlements, killing hundreds of people.
In 1825, Hongi Hika attacked again, this time Ngati Whatua. The battle was called Te Ika-a-Ranganui, and Hongi Hika triumphed again.
