  • Maraetai - Whitford - Howick
  • The Nga Tai tribe settled in the Maraetai, Whitford, and Howick area, under the forest cover
  • the Ngati te Ata tribe was in the south of Manukau, and on the coast of Whangaaroa was the Ngati Paoa tribe
  • Between 1740 and 1750 Ngati Whatua o Kaipara killed Kiwi Tamaki, the chief of Wai o Hua.
  • The two tribes made an intermarriage with Nga Oho, a descendant of Wai o Hua tribe.
  • In 1821 , Ngapuhi leader Hongi Hika made a series of attacks on the Tamaki tribes. He attacked two Ngati Paoa fortified settlements, killing hundreds of people.
  • In 1825, Hongi Hika attacked again, this time Ngati Whatua. The battle was called Te Ika-a-Ranganui, and Hongi Hika triumphed again.
