A softball player is offered chewing tobacco by one of her teammates before a game.
I - Identify a Positive and Negative Influence
She can either except the chewing tobacco and use it along with her teammates, or deny and say "no."
D - Decide and Act
No thanks, I'll pass.
Unhealthy - Pro: She will feel more connected with her teammates if she decides to chew with them Con: She may get addicted Healthy - Pro: She is avoiding the risks of gum disease, cavities, and sores in the mouth, as well as mouth cancer. Con: Her teammates may not accept her as a friend if she refuses their offer to chew like them.
E - Evaluate the Decision
The softball player's teammates are negative influences because they are trying to encourage her to make an unhealthy decision. An internal positive influence would be the player's knowledge of the dangers of using chewing tobacco.
I know that chewing tobacco is very dangerous and unhealthy.
The softball player decided to say "no" and not use the tobacco.
Yes, this was a great decision for many different reasons. Not only can chewing tobacco cause heart disease and stroke, but also, when using it, nicotine is absorbed through the mouth, into the bloodstream, where it then travels to the brain. Chewing tobacco has the possibility of increasing the risk of sudden death. The softball player avoided all of these risks by declining the offer.
