Hi! My name is Dr. Bettina Schirrmeister, biologist at the University of Bristol in the UK. I am going to tell you all about The Great Oxygenation Event that took place 2.5 billion years ago.
For the first 2 billion years of the earth there was no oxygen in the atmosphere and the ocean was green because it was filled with Iron
Cyanobacteria and Photosynthesis
2.5 billion years ago, Cyanobacteria starts the process of photosynthesis (the process that turns sunlight into food and energy, while leaving oxygen.)
Cyanobacteria becomes multi-cell organisms and starts to move around and out of water.
Changes in atmosphere
This caused the Great Oxygenation Event, producing a lot of oxygen, which killed many bacteria, but changed the atmosphere, so plants and animals could thrive on earth.
