  • Introduction
  • Hi! My name is Dr. Bettina Schirrmeister, biologist at the University of Bristol in the UK. I am going to tell you all about The Great Oxygenation Event that took place 2.5 billion years ago.
  • For the first 2 billion years of the earth there was no oxygen in the atmosphere and the ocean was green because it was filled with Iron
  • Cyanobacteria and Photosynthesis
  • 2.5 billion years ago, Cyanobacteria starts the process of photosynthesis (the process that turns sunlight into food and energy, while leaving oxygen.)
  • Cyanobacteria becomes multi-cell organisms and starts to move around and out of water.
  • Changes in atmosphere
  • This caused the Great Oxygenation Event, producing a lot of oxygen, which killed many bacteria, but changed the atmosphere, so plants and animals could thrive on earth.
