This story's character includes a girl from Kazakhstan named Maya, who is a shy and anxious high schooler, her little brother Nurzhan, their mom, and dad. Maya's parents are customed to Kazakhstan culture and do not know much about American culture.
Rising Action #2
This story takes place in America at Maya's school, Nurzhan's school, and their home.
"Maya you can go!"
Nurzhan gets into a fight with another kid that was mocking him called Ossie Nishizono. This leads Nurzhan to go to the office with a parent and Maya translated for Papa. She made the suspension seem minor so Papa does not get very angry at Nurzhan and Maya.
Maya’s dad catches Maya playing around with a boy which makes both mom and dad embarrassed. Maya's parents are angry because in Kazakhstan culture that wouldn't happen. Maya thinks that there is no more hope to go to the dance.
Nurzhan makes it up to Maya and asks their mom and dad if she and go to the dance and to their surprise they say yes. However, Nurzhan has to be Maya's chaperone. Maya's mom gives Maya her bracelet which symbolizes her trying to learn the American culture.
Maya goes to the dance with Nurzhan. She ends up dancing with Daniel and Nurzhan goes to the bathroom so she has some freedom. At night Maya kept thinking about Daniel.
