All I have for my Jim is $1.87. I cannot buy anything!
I BUY HAIR
come in, I will pay 20 dollars for your hair
Ah yes, the chain was made for nobody else!
Della and Jim are a young married couple, with not much money. It is the day before Christmas, and Della is sad that she doesn't have any presents for her husband. The only valuables the couple has is Della's Hair, and Jim's golden pocketwatch from his grandfather.
Della gives away her only prized possession to give her husband a gift. This begins the conflict.
A Chain!But I sold the watch!
Della goes through countless stores to find something to buy, but finally finds a platinum watch chain for Jim's watch
As Jim is about to reveal his present, is when the climax is. When Jim reveals his gift, it is combs, now pointless as Della has cut her hair.
Oh, The combs! But I sold my hair!
As Della reveals her gift, Jim says that he sold the watch for the combs, rendering the watch chain pointless. They love each other anyway.
They both sold their prized possessions for each other, not realizing that each other did so. Even still, they love each other, gifts or not. Their sacrifices were foolish, but still were a token of their love.
