Dred Scott was an African American man who sued his owner to gain his rights to be free.
Dred Scotts' owner was Dr. Emerson. He was a military doctor who often took his slaves with him to different parts of the US.
In 1836, Dr. Emerson was transferred to a fort in Wisconsin territory, taking Scott with him again. This is where Scott met and married Harriet Robinson.
Emerson got transferred again to St. Louis and then to Louisiana. There he met Eliza Irene Sanford, who he later on married.
The Emersons ordered the Scotts to return to them and continue their time as slaves. The Scotts didn't agree to this because they felt that they were free because they lived in free territory for extended time.
When Dr.Emerson deceased and the Scotts had to be passed on to another owner, they took action. The Scotts took Mrs. Emerson to court to obtain their freedom.
Mrs.Emerson highlighted that there was no way to show that they actually belonged to her.
After 10 years of court reversals and false hope the Scotts lost their "battle" for freedom. After they lost, they were given to a new owner and lived the rest of their lives as slaves. The Scotts had two daughters Eliza Scott and Lizzie Scott.
