  • Toussaint L'Overture was a Haitian slave who would soon leave a major impact on Haiti.
  • This document allows free blacks, mulattoes, along with the whites of course, to be treated as citizens.
  • Declaration of the Rights of Man
  • 
  • In 1789 the Declaration for the Rights of Man was written to establish citizenship to certain people.
  • What about the slaves?
  • And so, Toussaint L'Overture began  slave rebellion after hearing of this betrayal.  He went on to defeat the French, British, and Spanish with his slave army.
  • Come on men! We've almost won!
  • The British won't last much longer!
  • Abort mission! We can't take them!
  • In 1803, Toussaint L'Overture and Napoleon Bonaparte met to establish peace between France and Haiti.
  • I, Napoleon Bonaparte agree to recognize Haiti's independence in the pursuit of peace.
  • And I , Toussaint L'Overture, agree to retire from the public life for peace.
  • A few months later, Napoleon invited Toussaint to a safe conduct meeting.  This was where Napoleon betrayed him.
  • Have him put on a ship to France where he will be imprisoned in a mountain dungeon.
  • Napoleon! This was supposed to be a meeting regarding negotiating! We were at peace with each other!
  • Toussaint was imprisoned by Napoleon, and later died there because of an unknown reason.
  • After Toussaint died, the other people of Haiti continued the fight for freedom.  After Napoleon's defeat, he was exiled to the island of St. Helena, where he died.
