Prince Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha) was wealthy, happily married, and had a fine new son.
One day he decided to explore the kingdom outside of the castle walls.
As he went, he saw beggars, ill people, and homeless people. He became aware of suffering.
He left his family and his riches to find the answer to the question, "Why do people suffer and how can this suffering be cured?
At first he lived like a hermit, but still could not find his answer. Then he meditated for 49 days, and finally unserstood.
Siddhartha spent the rest of his life wandering the countryside and telling people of his discovery. To his followers, he became known as Buddha.
