Storyboard Text

  • Hello! I'm Asha de Vos, marine biologist and whale conservationist.
  • Whales, one of the most important animals in the marine ecosystem, have been endangered by human whaling and pollution.
  • The sharp drop in the whale population can harm much of the ocean. Whale excrement stimulates the growth of phytoplankton, the base of the entire marine food chain.
  • Whales also play an important role after they die. At least 200 different species consume dead whales, from sharks to hagfish.
  • Whales even carry carbon into the "carbon sinks" in the deep ocean, which helps the entire world by slowing down global warming.
  • Few species are as important to the ocean and the world as whales. Without human conservation efforts, hundreds of species will suffer.
