Washington sent a man by the name of John Jay to try to make things right with the British. He returned with a treaty that the U.S. would agree to pay debts to all merchants and Britain agreed to pay for any ships it had seized.
"You may not proceed unless you pay us money"
Washington wrote a farewell address, and in that he stated three main pieces of advice. This advice included setting the precedent that the president should not serve for more than two terms, it warned Americans about political parties, and it warned Americans about possible problems that could come if they got involved with Europe.
Alien & Sedition Acts
The early political parties were the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans. The key leaders of each of them were Alexander Hamilton for the Federalists and Thomas Jefferson for the Democratic-Republicans.
"We need to pack the courts with federalists"
As the new president Adams made the decision to send a mission to France to try to make things right with them. Once the individuals got there they were met with three agents know as XYZ. They demanded for a 250,000 dollar bribe and a 12,000,000 dollar loan. This troubled the Americans and most of them wanted to declare war, but Adams refused to.
Four acts were created to target French aliens and these were called the Alien and Sedition Acts. The four parts were the Naturalization Act, the Alien Act, the Alien Enemies Act, and the Sedition act.
During the last part of Adams term he tried to pack the courts with federalists to help him get reelected. He did this by having appointment that needed to end by midnight.
