  • The compromise will only end up benefiting you, and there won't be balance in congress

  • The northerners thought that slavery was a thing of the past, and did not believe that compromising on expansion would benefit the north.
  • Southern Slave States: Why did they support it?
  • Of course I support the compromise, it helps us keep our slaves
  • The northern federalists believed in the federal government would make the correct choice for the states.

  • I think states should have the right to nullify federal law
  • Northern states thought that the compromise might end up benefiting the south, and that that would give the south an unfair advantage in congress, and they did not want slavery to expand south.

  • Without slavery our economy will collapse
  • They supported it because it would prevent the escape of slaves, and they supported slavery, and although it benefits the north at the beginning, but expansion west would help them more.
