Point of View: 3rd Person
Setting: The Swamp
Theme: "You Can Not Cheat Death"
"You have made so much money out of me"
"The devil take me," said he, "if I have made a farthing!"
As Tom grew older, he began to regret the bargain he had made with the devil so he worked to cheat the devil out of his conditions. He became a violent church-goer and always had a Bible at his side in case he ran into the devil. "Tom had a lurking dread that the devil, after all, would have his due."
Tom decided to take a short-cut home one day through the swamp. It was thickly grown and gloomy, making it a retreat for all the owls of the neighborhood. "There was also stagnant pools ... where the trunks of pines and hemlocks lay half-drowned, half-rotting, looking like alligators sleeping in the mire."
One day, Tom snapped and refused to delay one of his clients, which happened to be a good friend of his. In the past, he had made a deal with the devil and promised that he would not cheat the devil of his conditions but he could not take it any longer. The devil was true to his word and came for Tom as soon as he went against their deal. Death is inevitable so when Tom attempted to cheat death, he was forced to pay the consequences.
