At the age of ten Liesel's brother dies on the train from the cold weather in route to meet their foster parents. This led to her having nightmares and her also finding The Gravedigger's Handbook.

At her brother's burial site she finds a book that the gravedigger dropped called The Gravedigger's Handbook. Liesel picks the book and keeps it. This begins her book stealing habit.
Liesel meets her foster parents for the first time. She is still in shock from losing her brother and parents.
Max Arrives to Hubermann's House
Liesel had a nightmare around midnight and peed in the bed. While Hans calmed her down and changed the bed sheets he found the book she had stolen under the bed. They then begin having 2 A.M. reading sessions everyday. It was at 2 A.M. because Rosa didn't approve of Liesel being taught how to read.
For Hitler's birthday there was a parade and a book burning. They burned all Jewish books and even burned some Jewish shops. When everyone cleared Liesel decided to steal another book. However, she didn't know the mayor's wife was watching the entire time.
