In 1864, General William Sherman made history when he and his soldiers marched from Atlanta to Savannah
I will lead all of you 60,000 men into the southern city of Atlanta
Sherman ordered that Atlanta’s military resources, including munitions factories, clothing mills and railway yards, be burned.
Sherman divided his army up into 4 different forces to give his troops more area to get food and supplies.
As Sherman and his troops headed towards Savannah, the small Confederate force there fled.
The March to Sea came to an end on December 21, 1864 when Sherman captured Savannah.
