Potato's were first introduced into Ireland in 1600. They originally came from the Americas. They were most likely introduced by washing up onto a beach, but there are many different introduction stories.
Most of the European Countries ignored the arrival of the potatoe but the Irish loved them.
They grew them and grew them. Potatoes were one of the only thigs the Irish ate as they were very filling but they were cheap as well.
But one day the Irish's worst nightmare occurred. All the potatoes caught a terrible disease and suddenly there were no more potatoes for the Irish to eat.
The poor Irish now had nothing to eat and they were very hungry, lot's of people died of starvation.
Lots of Irish now left for the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand because they needed food and wanted more freedom. They went in boats hat were known as "coffin ships" and Most left through Liverpool.
