Storyboard Text

  • 150 Men came looking for gold from England to Jamestown in 1607. Named the river and settlement after King James 1 of England.
  • John smith was the first leader of Jamestown(1608). He realized that men came to find gold instead of building a colony so he came up with ¨No work- No food"
  • There were Virginia natives named Powhatan Indians. At first the colonists and Powhatans barely ever fought. 
  • In 1609, 600 new English colonists arrive at Jamestown. Powhatans felt threatened so they destroyed the colonist's farms and livestock. Only 60 colonists survived. Called the ¨Starving time¨ 
  • In 1912 John Rolfe (English Colonist) introduces tobacco to Jamestown. Tobacco needed a lot of workers to help plant and pick it. Indentured servants and African slaves were used for the production of tobacco. 
  • Jamestown was governed by The House of Burgesses. It is a group of colonists that made laws for Virginia. Became the first example of self-government and first permanent English settlement  in North America.
