There were Virginia natives named Powhatan Indians. At first the colonists and Powhatans barely ever fought.
In 1609, 600 new English colonists arrive at Jamestown. Powhatans felt threatened so they destroyed the colonist's farms and livestock. Only 60 colonists survived. Called the ¨Starving time¨
In 1912 John Rolfe (English Colonist) introduces tobacco to Jamestown. Tobacco needed a lot of workers to help plant and pick it. Indentured servants and African slaves were used for the production of tobacco.
Jamestown was governed by The House of Burgesses. It is a group of colonists that made laws for Virginia. Became the first example of self-government and first permanent English settlement in North America.
