Joan was a 13 year old peasant girl when she heard voices and saw visions. She was the daughter of Northern French peasants. Joan lived in a very religious time. The voices that she heard, wanted her to save France from England. She heard them in 1425.

At age 17, Joan set out to find Charles 11V. She disguised herself as a boy and cut her hair short. The commander laughed in her face until she persuaded him to let her fight and lead. After, Charles agreed that God had sent her to save France.

Joan was called the "Maid of Orleans". She led the French to victory while fighting in Orleans. Charles had a suit of armor made specifically for her. In 1429 Joan led the troops into battle for the first time.

In 1430, a year after the battle of Orleans, Joan was captured by the English. She was thrown into prison to wait for her trial. Charles made no effort to ransom of rescue Joan from the English. The English paid an enormous ransom for her.

Joan was put on trial for witchcraft and heresy. The trial started in February of 1431, After a year of prison. The court made 70 accusations against her. She signed a contract to save her life but then took it back saying, "What I said, I said for fear of the fire."
I am not afraid.
Joan was burned at the stake on May 30, 1431. In 1445 her family requested that the pope re-open her case. When they re-opened it, Joan was found innocent of fall charges.
