  • "I feel as if God from heaven had laid his mighty hand upon me to stop me in my course..."
  • John Calvin was born on July 10, 1509, within a significant climax of the French Renaissance period in Noyon, Picardy, France. He was the eldest son of Gérard Cauvin the local Church minister and lawyer and was brought up initially in a Roman Catholic Family, but later became Protestant due to his evangelical beliefs. He studied theology and law and through this, made connections with others of Reformed faith.
  • In 1536 he was forced out of his homeland due to his Protestant views; and fled to the city of Strasbourg, old Germany with his two Evangelical friends and siblings. His recent publication of Institutes of the Christian Religion; developed Protestant views across Europe. He was an extremely wanted man by the Papacy; due to these writings and lectures that opposed the Roman Catholic Church.
  • As night fell upon them; the group decided to rest at a hostelry in Genova, Switzerland. They then met the local Church administrator William Farel. Farel was invigorated by the contents of "The Institutes" and wanted Calvin to preach this theology in his Protestant Church. At first, Calvin was a sceptic; but was threatened by Farel that God would curse all Calvin's studies unless he stayed in Geneva. He then accepted Farel's proposition and taught his theology for two years.
