It was the 1st of January 1833, I had just been taken to live with Mr. Covey. It was like day and night when it came to him and me, we were total opposites. Mr. Covey was known for "Breaking Slaves." I was given for the first time in my life the job of a field hand.
I felt as if I was whipped every second of the day. Many cannot imagine the amount of pain I have gone through being worked as much as I was. I still can't believe that they think their actions are moral.
One day I felt very ill and he still came and beat me."You ain't sick, get up" he yelled. I was kicked very forcefully when I could not get up the first time I tried. The second time I tried to get up, I succeeded and he left me alone.
I decided to scurry into the woods. It was dark and the trees howled. I met a man named Sandy Jenkins and he told me about the magic route. After we went our seperate ways, I decided to go back to the infamous Covey.
When I arrived at the Infamous Covey's farm, Covey started to whip me, "CRACK" I decided to throw a punch and it turned into what was known in history as the 2 hour fight between Covey and Douglass. This gave me a feeling of hope and that sense of fear was starting to fade away.
