"It was not long before the youth was the most famous physician in the whole world." (Grimm, 3). The young doctor is the protagonist in the short story as he is the main character. The boy is a static character as he does not change as a character throughout the short story. He is involved in the conflict where he wants to save the king and princess with this herb, but Death is telling him not to. After going against Death, he ends up dying.
“I am Death, and I make all equal.” (Grimm, 1). The father of the young boy, coming from a poor family, has to choose who the godfather for his child will be. He has the choice of God, Devil, and Death where they each offer different things. As the the family is poor and Death offers everything equal, he chose Death. Death is the antagonist as he gives the boy the herb to save anyone but he will kill him if he goes against Death's orders. Death is a static character.
"But beware of using the herb against my will, or it might fare ill with thee." (Grimm, 2). Death gives the doctor the gift to save the ill with a herb, but death is to choose who lives and who dies. If the doctor was to go against death by using the herb against his wishes, there would be consequences. The conflict in "Godfather Death" is a person vs person conflict.
