Bruno is a nine year old boy who the book mainly focuses on. The book deeply talks about his actions and thoughts. Bruno is very upset about moving to Out-With and wished he was back in Berlin. He continuously feels upset and wishes to go home He soon longs to explore again and heads to the Out-With camp.
"Let's have none of that."
Gretel is twelve years old and is talked about much in the book but she's not quite yet a main character. She loves picking on Bruno but doesn't hate the house as much as Bruno. She loves to flirt with a younger soldier that treats Jews very poorly but still hangs out with him. She is called the Hopeless case by Bruno as well.
Maria does not show a lot of emotion. She Talks to Bruno often only when spoken to.
She is called a hopeless case
Lieutenant Kotler was introduced in the book after Bruno and his family moved to Out- With. He works for Bruno's father, and he is a teenager. He calls Bruno a "little man" which he hates and was not being very nice to him, but Gretel loves to flirt with Kotler. He treats the Jewish servant very poorly and screams at him.

Bruno and Gretel's father is a well talked about character in the book. He makes the decision about leaving Berlin because the Fury came to dinner. Whatever he wants, he gets, and he is the boss. His position is a commandant, and is in very high rankings. He shelters his children and doesn't show the characteristic of understandment.
His uniform is always pressed and his hair is lacquered back
He is very focused on his job... wanted to move
He doesn't usually give hugs
He is a commandant
Maria is the house's maid and she is called the "overpaid maid." She is over 50 I would guess and her emotions aren't shown near as much as other characters. One day, Bruno said something rude about his father but Maria told him never to say that again. Father helped Maria's mother when she was dying, payed for all the expenses of medical and funeral things for her mother, and took Maria in when she didn't have a job.
1. Maria wears a uniform 2. She keeps her head down low
"Yes, of course Master Bruno."
Pavel is the Jewish waiter who peels the vegetables at night and he serves the food and drinks. He rarely talks to anyone except Maria, but one day Bruno fell off a swing and cut his knee open. It wasn't a very bad cut but it bled. Pavel scooped him up and fixed it right away, but took a risk because he would be punished if he was seen talking to Bruno.
