I wanted an idea animal to hunt. So I said, "What are the attributes of an ideal quarry?" And the answer was, of course, "It must have courage, cunning, and above all, it must be able to reason.
"The old charts call it Ship-Trap Island" (Page 1). This quote establishes the setting as Ship-Trap Island and the areas surrounding it.
Rising Action 3
Tonight, we will hunt--you and I.
"He leaped up onto the rail and balanced himself there, to get the greater elevation; his pipe, striking a rope, was knocked from his mouth. He lunged for it; a short, hoarse cry came from his lips as he realized he had reached too far and lost his balance. The cry was pinched off short as the blood-warm water of the Caribbean Sea dosed over his head" (Page 2). This quote provides context on the rising action in which Rainsford fell off his yacht.
This quote establishes the second rising action in the story by explaining Zaroff's train of thought that led him to hunting humans, building tension in the story that contributes to the climax.
This particular quote shows that Zaroff initiated the hunt with Rainsford due to Rainford's desire to leave the island.
I wish to leave island at once.
"Rainsford forced himself on towards the gap. He reached it. It was the shore of the sea. Across a cove he could see the gloomy gray stone of the chateau. Twenty feet below him the sea rumbled and hissed. Rainsford hesitated. He heard the hounds. Then he leapt far out into the sea..." (Page 13). In this quote, Connell uses imagery to create a vivid picture in the reader's mind, which helps them visualize the climax better.
"When the general and his pack reached the place by the sea, the Cossack stopped. For some minutes he stood regarding the blue-green expanse of water. He shrugged his shoulders. The he sat down, took a drink of brandy from a sliver flask, lit a cigarette and hummed a bit from Madame Butterfly" (Page 13). This quote signifies that Rainsford has beaten Zaroff in their hunt, so this scene counts as a falling action because it leads to the resolution.
