  • Nick Carroway, the narrator, has recently moved east. He visits his cousin, Daisy, and her husband, Tom Buchanon.
  • Exposition
  • Conflict
  • Nick struggles to retell the events of his life in a book involving a man he admired and met named Gatsby.
  • After dinner with his cousin and her husband, Nick is dragged along to Tom's mistress's apartment. This is clear to Nick that Tom is having an affair with different women.
  • Rising Action
  • Nick finally learns about his mysterious neighbor and his humble past. He learns that he has been in love with Daisy for years which is the only reason why he throws big parties. With Nick's help, Gatsby and Daisy are reunited.
  • Rising Action
  • Daisy realizes that Tom doesn't actually love her so she leaves him for her original love, Jay Gatsby. They plan on starting a new life somewhere else so they decide to run away from the city. However, while running away, Daisy runs over Tom's mistress, Myrtle.
  • Climax
  • Falling Action // Resolution
  • In the end, Gatsby takes responsibility for Myrtle's death. This results in Gatsby being shot by Myrtle's husband, George Wilson. Daisy moves away and acts like nothing happened. Nick is heartbroken when this happens and decides to write a book about the Great Gatsby.
