Salva gets left behind in the group because he is a child. The group thought that he would complain and fall behind so they left him in the barn. When Salva awoke he did not know what to do because he was dependent on the adults in the group.
Salva lost his uncle to some looters in the dessert. Even beneath his terrible sadness he felt empowered. Since his uncle had died the group started treating him like he was weak and helpless. Salva was determined to prove them wrong. He now had to depend on himself.
Salva and everyone at the refuge camp in Ethiopia have to cross the Gilo River to get back to Southern Sudan. Luckily, Salva and some other boys made it across. Salva decided to go to Kenya, many boys followed him and he became the leader of fifteen hundred boys. He lead them to Kenya.
