Hussein Arrives At His New School
"Windows, they can see in here."
Hussein At The Plant Nursery
Hello Hussein, what are you doing?
Look its growing... There all growing!
The Swimming Carvival
Hussein has arrived at his new school feeling anxious and overwhelmed. The kids in his class called him The Shah, they thought he was foreign and weird. "Windows, they can see in here." He would say. Making the kids confused and frustrated.
It's okay Hussein, its only a ball
Pearl and her little sister, Suzy were walking past a nursery and recognised Hussein inside, staring at a mandarin tree. "Running his hand over it, as if he couldn't believe it was there. Smelling the fruit, pressing at the earth and even listening to the leaves."Pearl and Suzy walked up to him, 'see its growing,' he said with the sound of hope in his voice, 'they're all growing.' That day Pearl saw a different side to Hussein and started calling him by his real name.
Revealing At The Swimming Carnival
Oh my God!
At the swimming carnival, a couple days later, the kids and Hussein were sitting near the canteen line, watching the other children swim. "Mr Henney raised the pistol and The Shah made a funny little sound, like an strangled cat, and shriveled in his chair. Henney fired at the roof for the start of the race." Hussein kept looking up at the roof for the bullet holes, but there was none. When it came to his race Hussein was nervous, "Alright boys take your blocks." Yelled Henney. Hussein refused to take his shirt off. "Very modest." Bruce said, not knowing the real reason he would not take it off.
On your Marks...
Hussein had a go at Rules Footy. "No worries for a while. He could mark, bounce, tackle and kick fairly straight." "But then he took a leap trying to pull a high kick out of the sky. It was dropping towards him from the sun, and maybe he saw something that was not there. Anyway one moment he was up there, flying like a bird, and the next he crouched in to a tight little ball, falling into the mud. the ball bounced beside him." "Henney picked up the ball and knelt beside The Shah." ' Its only a ball, Hussein, look at it,' he said. 'You're not there anymore. just here.' He was shocked and terrified.
At the next swimming carnival, Hussein took his place on the blocks with his purple t-shirt on. "He hesitated for a moment, then he pulled the purple shirt over his head." "The main scar, a bloodless seam ran from his right shoulder to his left hip. the second scar was a second belly button punched in his side. Marks of Shrapnel and a bullet. A soldiers wounds." "And only ten," murmured Henney and he shook his head. "Right boys take your blocks."
