In chapter one we learn that children are stranded on the island because of a plane crash. Ralph and Piggy are the first to meet. Piggy and Ralph meet first, then they call a meeting by using a conch shell to summon anyone else on the island. They meet a boy named Jack, who has put himself in charge of his choir
In chapter two Enraged at the group's reckless disorganization, Piggy tells them furiously that one of the littlest boys—the same boy who told them about the snake-beast—was playing over by the fire and now is missing. The boys are crestfallen and shocked, and Ralph is struck with shame. They pretend that nothing has happened.
In chapter Three On the beach, Ralph and Simon are building huts. Ralph is frustrated because only he and Simon are working on the huts, which are falling apart and awful. He complains to Jack that everyone else is off playing or hunting. Savagery confronts civilization, as Jack hunts while Ralph builds shelters.
