At the age of twenty, on the high road from his native place to the city of Boston, where his uncle, a small dealer in the grocery line, was to take him behind the counter.
After journeying on foot from sunrise till nearly noon of a summer's day, his weariness and the increasing heat determined him to sit down in the first convenient shade, and await the coming up of the stage-coach.
While he lay sound asleep in the shade, other people were wide awake, and passed to and fro, afoot, on horseback, and in all sorts of vehicles, along the sunny road by his bedchamber.
Two old couples stopped by from their carriage and wanted to give their wealth to David Swan yet they thought not to disturb the nap of the young man so they refuse to and went back to the carriage.
The next person who passed was the young woman who thought that he looked handsome and blushed yet through all this David Swan is still having a good nap.
Suddenly, two men with shabby clothes approached him and thought to rob him and if he wakes up, they'd kill him. Suddenly a dog went near and they thought it was his dog and the dog kept barking them away so they stopped and went away thanks to this dog.
Yet through these opportunities wasted, David Swan remained asleep.
