The Mexican American War was a war that occurred between 1846 and 1848. It occurred due President James Polk's expansionist ideals.
This war strongly fueled expansionist views because it was based on the "Manifest Destiny", and it made Americans want to expand into Mexico.
How did it get started?
This war started because of President James Polk's expansionist views and the old American ideal of "Manifest Destiny"- which claimed that Americans were chosen by God to expand to all lands.
The Mexican American war was also known as a manufactured war, as it began due to American expansionist advocates who simply wanted war in order to take over territory.
Who was involved?
I am Santa Anna, and I am a Mexican legend who led the fighting force on the Mexican side.
I am Winfield Scott, and I led the American fighting force during this war, under the leadership of my President- James Polk. Additionally, Zachary Taylor is helping fight and lead troops elsewhere.
Results of the War:
The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This treaty was signed on February 2, 1848, and it stated for Mexico to sell 525,000 square miles of land to the U.S for 15 million dollars. This treaty also recognized the Rio Grande as the border separating the U.S. and Mexico.
Connections to Chicano Movement:
This war led to the New Mexican Land Grant Struggle- which was about Chicanos fighting back for their identity and land to call their home that had been taken away by the U.S.
This war greatly influenced the Chicano Movement as it gave birth to the ideals of Atzlan and it fueled passion for Chicanos.
